When the life you had doesn’t fit anymore.
Sometimes change happens to you.
A relationship ends. You lose a job. Your children grow up. You move. Your health, family, career, or responsibilities change and suddenly the life you understood doesn’t look the same anymore.
Other times, nothing dramatic happens.
You just realize:
“I don’t want to keep living like this.”
You know something needs to change, but you aren’t sure what—or you’re afraid of what happens if you actually change it.
I provide therapy for life transitions in Austin, Texas, and online throughout Texas for adults navigating change, uncertainty, identity shifts, difficult decisions, and that frustrating feeling of knowing you’re ready for something different but not knowing how to move forward.
What Counts as a Life Transition?
You don’t need to be experiencing a crisis for a transition to affect you.
Life transitions can include:
- Career changes or starting a new job
- Leaving the military or changing professional identities
- Graduation
- Moving
- Marriage
- Separation or divorce
- Breakups
- Becoming a parent
- Children leaving home
- Changes in friendships
- Changes in family roles
- Starting over after a major loss
- Entering a new stage of adulthood
- Questioning your identity or direction
- Rebuilding after burnout
- Realizing you’ve outgrown a relationship, career, or lifestyle
- Making a major decision about what comes next
Even positive changes can bring anxiety, grief, uncertainty, and stress.
Sometimes you’re mourning what you’re leaving behind while simultaneously wanting what comes next.
Both can be true.
“I Don’t Know What I Want Anymore.”
Sometimes feeling stuck isn’t about having no options.
It’s having too many.
You think through every possible outcome.
You ask everyone what they think.
You make a decision and immediately question it.
You wait for certainty before taking the next step.
Eventually, you’re spending so much energy trying to make the perfect decision that you don’t make one at all.
That’s where life transitions can overlap with anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism, and avoidance.
Therapy can give you room to separate:
What do I actually want?
from:
What am I afraid will happen if I choose it?
Those aren’t always the same thing.
When Old Patterns Follow You Into a New Chapter
Changing your circumstances doesn’t automatically change your patterns.
You can leave one relationship and recreate the same dynamic with someone new.
Change careers and bring the same perfectionism and burnout with you.
Move somewhere new and still struggle with avoidance.
Promise yourself this chapter will be different and slowly find yourself responding in the same familiar ways.
That’s not evidence that you’re incapable of changing.
It may mean the pattern itself needs attention—not just the circumstances around it.
How Therapy for Life Transitions Can Help
I’m not going to tell you what decision to make.
Therapy isn’t about handing your life over to someone else and asking them to choose for you.
We’ll work on understanding what’s influencing your decisions so you can make them more intentionally.
That may include:
- Clarifying what actually matters to you
- Identifying fears that are influencing decisions
- Managing uncertainty
- Reducing overthinking
- Processing grief around what’s ending
- Adjusting to new roles or responsibilities
- Exploring identity
- Recognizing repeating patterns
- Building confidence in your own decisions
- Setting boundaries
- Challenging expectations you’ve inherited from other people
- Developing healthier coping strategies
- Figuring out what you want the next chapter to look like
The goal isn’t to eliminate uncertainty.
It’s to become more comfortable making decisions without needing certainty first.
Starting Over Can Be Complicated
There’s a strange part of changing your life that doesn’t get talked about enough.
You can know you made the right decision and still miss what you left.
You can be excited about what’s next and terrified at the same time.
You can outgrow something without believing it was always bad.
You can become a different version of yourself without rejecting who you were before.
Change doesn’t always fit neatly into “good” or “bad.”
Sometimes it’s simply different.
Therapy gives you somewhere to figure out what that difference means for you.

You Don’t Need the Entire Plan
You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going before you take the next step.
Sometimes the work starts with figuring out what’s keeping you where you are.
Then we figure out what happens next.
Understanding yourself is where change begins.
